The Instruments of Oblivion are a London based improvisation ensemble under the musical direction of founder and visual artist, Joshua Thomson. In usual circumstances the Instruments of Oblivion is a collection of artefacts and hand made musical devices that reflect and develop the cosmology of “The Institute of Ape Culture”… a framing device for Joshua’s artistic practice. The Institute imagines early man’s engagement with basic utilitarian problem solving and the development of a symbolic order.

The Show in Vienna will feature Instruments of Oblivion as a duo consisting of Thomson and Paul Williams, and their costumes will be eye catching. Thomson has shown his work and played his music the world over, most recently in London, New York and Dublin. Paul Williams is a writer, musician and organiser of happenings, most recently curating minimalist and modern classical concerts in his home town of Northampton, England.

40 Jahre nach seinem Entstehen kommt das sozialrealistische Drama über die kubanische Revolution in einer restaurierten Fassung zum ersten Mal ins Publikumskino. In vier Episoden sang der legendäre russische Regisseur Mikhail Kalatozov, der mit «Wenn die Kraniche ziehen» Filmgeschichte schrieb, 1964 eine Hymne auf die kubanische Revolution. Während in den ersten beiden Episoden die soziale Ungerechtigkeit und die Schlechtigkeit der dafür verantwortlichen Yankees angeprangert werden, feiern die andern beiden Teile den Heroismus und die Opferbereitschaft der Revolutionäre. Ästhetisch steht der Film ganz in der Tradition des grossen sowjetischen Revolutionskinos eines Eisensteinoder Pudowkin.

Sophie Williams, aka Mrs. Pilgrimm: cellist, singer, musical manipulator, poet. Since the last visit she made to Wien there have been many developments with her style and her method…her life…the moulding and extrusion of the songs, loops, imagery and soundscapes she creates are further refined, defined, sublime. With a new collection of material to premier at this Wien show… this promises to be a special and rare event.
